Human beings seem to have an inherent need to blame somebody when they get caught out. Some standbys are “the devil made me do it”, or “God told me to do it”. Without the devil, churches would not survive. Everybody is afraid of something and the churches have distilled this fear into the ultimate deterrent in the monstrous shape of the devll and the threat of eternal damnation. However, there’s hope. Sitting naked on a church pew, facing down this monster is the ultimate protest against the authority of the church. Where there is no devil, there is no need for eternal damnation which means that there is no need for salvation. So wayward parishioners can go on being wayward, at least during the week. And most people can manage to be good for at least one day which is Sunday. There is a clue here in this name of the week. Religion does have astrological roots.
