Rachel was an interesting young woman with a complicated life. Sometimes when people are at a crisis in their lives, the complications multiply. It’s not their fault. Lives are built like a scaffold, but if the foundation is ripped away, the scaffold collapses and bits and pieces fall all over the place. I found Rachel at Calwell shops, but I imagined her. as a noisy protester outside the houses of parliament, in this case outside Canberra’s modest little Assembly. If the multitude of people cheated of a decent place to live, stormed the parliaments all at once, we might get a bit of action. But organising such a protest would be as difficult as herding cats.
